Five reasons to go to Thursday's meeting:
1) The PQ community has been working since the meeting on Monday to finalize a qualified redistricting plan that meets the commission's guidelines and puts PV back in District 5 with PQ. YOU NEED TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!
2) Because of the outstanding showing on Monday, the commission is starting to realize we are an involved community and part of PQ/District 5. They are starting to question the bogus testimonials from APAC that they represent us and that there is a need for the 40% of Pan Asians within Park Village to be better represented by having a Pan Asian as an elected City Council representative. APAC has been selling to the commission the need to have a Pan Asian City Council member in order to fairly have the unique needs and interests of the Pan Asian Islander community addressed. The testimony on Monday from our neighborhood clearly sent the message that the Pan Asians living in District 5 do not need, or want this, and that they feel as though their interests are currently being addressed just fine by their existing non-Asian City Councilperson and do not feel as though they need to have a Pan Asian Council person to fairly represent their needs. Our Pan Asian neighbors of our neighborhood clearly told the commission that they didn't even know who or what APAC was as there has been no outreach to them to determine if they felt their needs were being ignored or not fairly represented. APAC does not represent us. Our community is clearly stating "we are not interested in playing the race card" because we are combined community of many races living harmoniously together with our unique interests being addressed just fine within our existing Council District. We need to continue to explain to the commission that APAC does not represent the Pan Asian community but rather only the business interests of some powerful Pan Asian business owners. We in District 5 (PV/PQ/TH/Blk Mtn Ranch) are a community of nationalities that desires to assimilate and integrate within our neighborhoods, not segregate for the purpose of championing special interests. We need to keep this up and show them we mean business! APAC does not represent our best interests and the commission needs to hear this loud and clear.
3) On August 3rd., Kensington came en-masse to their local meeting and asked to be put in Dist. 3. The commission voted Monday night to accept their request! It takes time to get these things done. Don't give up! Keep the commission's feet to the fire!
4) The city hired a consultant to keep the commission on track to finish in time and avoid penalties. He is putting pressure on them to come up with a final plan soon because they have to allow for public comment. WE NEED TO ACT NOW TO CHANGE THEIR MIND BEFORE THEY MAKE A FINAL DECISION.
5) It is very important that when speaking, you state that you want Park Village to be united with District 5. Park Village is part of Penasquitos which is part of District 5. We do not want to be separated from Penasquitos and we do NOT want Penasquitos to be separated from District 5 which are our communities of common interest. We need to be much clearer on Thursday on this point than we were on Monday. We want to be united with District 5 otherwise, they might try to simply expand the area to be moved to District 6 from just Park Village to all of PQ south of SR-56 (Commissioner Potter discussed this on Monday) which does NOT accomplish the principles of the redistricting which is to keep communities of common interest together. ALL OF PQ IN DISTRICT 5.
Encourage your friends, families, neighbors (including those who live in Torrey Highlands and Black Mountain Ranch) to come to the meeting to speak. The meeting begin sharply at 4pm. City Council Chambers, 12th floor, 202 "C" Street, San Diego, CA 92101. It will take some time to get through the metal detector so I urge you to arrive at least an hour early to guarantee a spot. Once you have found our item on the Agenda, fill out a speaker slip in opposition to the proposed redistricting line which moves PV into District 6. Your slip must be submitted promptly to the clerk.
Please make and bring signs to hold that say the following:
"UNITE PQ IN D5"
Please do not bring signs that say "One PQ".
Paul Hoover, Park Village resident
